Moderna on Friday said the Food and Drug Administration has delayed the approval of its vaccine for respiratory syncytial virus to the end of May due to "administrative constraints" at the agency. The FDA was expected to make a decision on the RSV shot on Sunday. If cleared, the RSV shot would become the company's second product to launch in the U.S. after its once-blockbuster Covid vaccine. It would also be the third RSV vaccine to enter the market after shots from Pfizer and GSK rolled out last year. Moderna said its RSV vaccine is still on track to be reviewed by an advisory panel to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during a meeting on June 26 and 27.

The company said that it had decided to voluntarily withdraw all licenses to market its Covid vaccine. In March, AstraZeneca requested that the vaccine be withdrawn from most European countries.

But the vaccine has not generated revenue for AstraZeneca since April 2023, the company said. “As multiple, variant Covid-19 vaccines have … been developed, there is a surplus of available updated vaccines. “AstraZeneca has therefore taken the decision to initiate withdrawal of the marketing authorizations for Vaxzevria within Europe,” it added. AstraZeneca said it would work with regulators in other countries to “align on a clear path forward,” including withdrawing marketing authorizations for the vaccine where no future commercial demand is expected.

CNN —The number of measles cases around the world nearly doubled from 2022 to 2023, researchers say, presenting a challenge to efforts to achieve and maintain elimination status in many countries. The US has had 128 measles cases reported in 20 jurisdictions this year, as of Friday, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Measles was declared eliminated in the US in 2000, “meaning there is no measles spreading within the country and new cases are only found when someone contracts measles abroad and returns,” the CDC says. CNN —Dengue cases are surging in the Americas, with cases reported topping 5.2 million as of this week, surpassing a yearly record set in 2023, according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). PAHO spokesperson Ashley Baldwin told CNN Thursday that 5,214,480 cases of dengue have been reported in the Americas as of Wednesday. In all of 2023, the total number of cases reported in the region was 4,572,765. “We are in an emergency situation because of dengue,” PAHO Director Jarbas Barbosa said in a news briefing Thursday. Early detection and access to proper medical care will reduce the probability of dying due to severe dengue,” Baldwin added.
